Ohio Man Charged With Creating 'Fruitfly' Mac Malware

An Ohio man has been charged with creating a strain of Mac malware known every bit "Fruitfly" and installing information technology on thousands of computers to spy on victims, obtain their personal information, and produce child pornography.

SecurityWatch According to the US Department of Justice, the scheme—orchestrated by Phillip Durachinsky, 28, of North Royalton, Ohio—went on for xiii years. From 2003 until January 2022, Durachinsky allegedly used Fruitfly to interruption into computers endemic by private citizens and companies, schools, a police department, and the government.

The malware enabled him to capture screenshots from victims' computers, log their keystrokes, and turn on the camera and microphone to stealthily record images and audio, the Justice Department wrote in a news release. He likewise allegedly took advantage of his unauthorized access to steal login credentials; taxation, medical, and cyberbanking records; photos, internet search data; and other "potentially embarrassing communications." Using the stolen login credentials, Durachinsky was able to admission and download additional data from third-party websites.

"Durachinsky is further alleged to have watched and listened to victims without their knowledge or permission and intercepted oral communications taking place in the room where the infected computer was located," the Justice Department wrote. "In some cases, the malware alerted Durachinsky if a user typed words associated with pornography."

Durachinsky has been charged in a 16-count indictment with Computer Fraud and Abuse Act violations, Wiretap Act violations, product of child pornography, and aggravated identity theft. The indictment alleges he "saved millions of images and often kept detailed notes of what he saw," according to the DoJ.
